At first glance,
Sportsbetting on the Edge by John C. Tarbet isn't a book that grabs your attention. The title doesn't begin to give you a concept as to what the book is about, which is unfortunate, as the book is the single best book on sports betting probability theory, statistics, and odds that I've come across.
Sportsbetting on the Edge should be required reading for anyone that bets on sports on a serious basis. The book covers a lot of fundamental probability topics the sports bettor must understand: numerical distributions, standard deviations, odds, and streaks.
Also, the book takes a strong look at the mathematics behind the sports book's edge and how it relates to the sports bettor's edge to determine the optimum bet size for every bet you make, allowing you to maximize the profit for any real edge you have.
Lastly, the book ends with a reality check where the author provides the reader with the real world expectations the serious gambler will encounter and grind through to make a profit over the long term.
Along the way you'll also encounter a variety of illustrations to go along with the various topics covered in the book, so even readers without a strong mathematical background should be able to grasp the concepts without a lot of trouble.
The only downside to the book is the atrocious abuse of commas, as they're rarely used to split up sentences properly. That reason alone doesn't diminish the value of this book by that much; you just need to keep yourself from pausing when you read a comma in the book.
If you don't have a strong math background, or you simply want to come up to speed on various probability and statistics topics in regards to how they relate to making money betting sports then
Sportsbetting on the Edge is for you.
I give this book a four out of five on the Benjamin scale.
